What is a Mentor?

A mentor is an individual who provides young people with support, counsel, friendship, and reinforcement. Mentors should be positive role models and encourage academic success and positive personal development
Mentors may also serve as tutors for basic math, reading, and language skills or may teach a particular skill such as bike repair, sewing, computers, or art projects.
time commitments vary depending on the type of assignment desired( group workshops or one on one). Group mentoring workshops are scheduled to discuss "topics of the day" and/or a series of planned group discussions using life skills materials. in some cases, one on one mentoring relationships occur in a more structured process.
Our Program and activities are focused on prevention. We strive to foster...

Confidence, Character, Competence, and "Connectedness"

of our young people to their family, peers, and community. Programs provide support and links to services in such areas as vocational training, health education, recreation, cultural tolerance, environmental awareness, and the development of leadership, conflict resolution and decision making skills.

Why Mentor?

Both mentors and mentees benefit from mentoring.
According to research, youth who meet regularly with mentors are:
  • 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
  • 33% less likely to hit someone
  • 27% less likely to begin drinking alcohol
  • 52% less likely to skip school
  • more confident in their schoolwork performance
  • better at getting along with their families and schoolmates
Mentors benefit by sharing their experiences and knowledge, developing their leadership skills, and having a positive effect on the academic and social development of a youth.
